This has been on mind and I’d like to know what others think

So I just started a new job in the health insurance industry. I am in training with someone who has been with the company for about 3 years. This is the story he told us in training : There is a period every year called AEP in health insurance. There is a period every year called AEP in health insurance. AEP means annual enrollment period and everyone who has Medicare part A and B are eligible for sales. This is our busiest time of the year and where employees will make a majority of their money for the year. The period is between October 15 to December 7th. They tell us that during this period there is no PTO and everyone is required to work overtime. The gentlemen training us began to tell us about his first year at the company.

During his first year he was killing it with sales. Then right after Thanksgiving his mother passed away. He says he only took 4 days off to mourn her. Then came back to work. He said he got promoted because he showed the company dedication by coming back to work so soon after his mother died and did not let it affect his performance. The company noticed this and made him à performance manager.

Now what I heard is that you had a severe traumatic experience and because you put the company before yourself they rewarded you. A story like that seems to imply to new employees that even if someone dies you are to work and you will be promoted for it.

It felt wrong.
