Please excuse my mistakes, I'm not a native English speaker.
I have been a teacher for more than a decade. A few years ago I got an opportunity to work at one of the top private high schools in my country. Having worked for a government school before I was really excited.
Great facilities, great people and double my old salary. At my new job the students were also awesome, intelligent kids who wanted to learn. This was a revelation as the kids at the old state school could not care less, and everyday was a bloody struggle.
I worked there for 4 years. Then we got new management and suddenly I was expected to teach in the evenings until 21:00. Work on Saturday and Sundays. I refused and told them that I believe in a work-life balance and that I work 1 hour unpaid overtime (in the office) every day already (as well as many hours at home doing lesson plans and checking work) and I think that is enough.
I always got great 360 reviews from my students, coworkers and manager. I taught for the most hours, taught the most subjects and did the most community service in my department, but suddenly I was let go because, “While you are a great teacher we feel that you do not fit in with the school's culture“.
It's been 2 years and I am still pissed about it.
