I’m gonna preface this by saying I’m a 21 year old who started working when I was 17. ( So maybe I don’t have enough experience to touch on this. )
At my first job I started at 13.69. I ended the job making 13.98. They couldn’t round it up to 14?
Anyway, these co workers of mine were making 14. This is after their own raises and being there for up to 5 years. Just 30 cents more then the minimum wage in my area of 13.69.
Fast forward to my new job. I meet a co worker who is the most loyal and hard working person I’ve ever met and has worked there 6 years.
I end up asking her how much she makes. (I always thought this was a normal thing until realizing after being on here that managers hate it). She’s making the SAME as me. In the six years, not ONE raise. I asked her why? She said “oh they’re so nice, I’m just scared to ask. I probably should.”
I was truthfully in shock. This person picked up shifts on their days off, never called out, worked almost every holiday and went above the fucking beyond.
I ended up quitting for that reason. This company wasn’t planning on showing any appreciation to their employees and was never gonna give any raises to me if they didn’t give any to her.
Long story short, now I make more than her and it makes me sad. She has a kid with medical issues as well.
it hurts knowing there’s probably many others like my ex co worker getting used and underpaid AS F- for the amount of experience she has.
She still doesn’t realize her managers don’t care about her. But she says “they’re like my second family.” Barf.
Those managers KNOW she deserves more but also know she will NEVER ask…
