I had been with the company for 5 years. Starting pay was $10.00 in 2017 and then I got a raise every other year or so. My last raise was $13.00 in March of this year. I thought it would help me but then the economy crashed and everything started going up. I haven't been able to save up for a car because I was spending $500 a month on rideshare to get to work and back. I can't afford my own groceries and had to use food stamps because Uber was basically taking over my grocery bill.
I told my bosses this and asked if it were possible I could work from home to save money on Uber, and they told me to “move closer to work” next year. I told them I could not do that. I can't even afford to move. After that they more or less said I was SOL and told me I would “figure things out”.
I started applying relentlessly to WFH jobs in my area and this month I was hired as a customer service agent for a reputable local company for $13.50 an hour and $14.00 starting in January. It was a no-brainer decision and I told my bosses I needed to resign because a better opportunity had come up and I couldn't pass it up. They told me to come in that day to sign the resignation papers and collect my belongings.
A week later I was curious and wanted to see how soon a job ad for my position had been put up. I found it, and saw that they were offering a “competitive wage of $15 per hour” and “$700 a week”. It felt like a big slap in the face. I felt cheated and shocked. If they had offered me that same raise in pay while I was with them, I probably would have stayed. I felt hurt and confused because they always acted like they cared about me. I have learned companies do not care about you, no matter how long you stay with them or help them with things outside of your job description.
I was loyal for nothing. Absolutely nothing.
