Anybody ever use the last paycheck laws when an employer refused to pay after separation?

This might be the wrong forum, but a friend was just telling me about a time he worked a menial job for less than a week, was fired because it wasn't the right fit, and then they refused to pay him because he “did not work the full week in our system.” I thought this was illegal so I looked it up and learned about the Last Paycheck laws that vary from state to state and it seems like, yes, this is absolutely illegal, but how an employee recovers that last paycheck may be difficult. Anybody ever done this to get their last paycheck, even if it was just a few dollars? Are your choices basically to complain to the government or hire a lawyer and sue?
