I have recently started a remote job doing transcription. It seemed like a great job where I could make my own hours, but it pays minimum wage. They also told me during orientation that we are only being paid for the transcription we do, not for emails or the company Teams accounts they've set up for us. They were pretty insistent in, if you're not transcribing an audio clip, you should not be clocked in (and also emphasized clocking out during bathroom/water breaks).
I'm not sure how strict they'll be on this, but it really rubbed me the wrong way and I'm not sure of how legal it is to tell us to check email & Teams chats every day but not paying us for them (they worded it like it will impact our quota of transcription clips).
Anyone have any knowledge about companies like this and how legal it is?
