Why is it so hard/intimidating to take a day off work?

My job is probably the most understanding job when it comes to days off. No matter the reason, they say OK and hope you feel better. But it's ingrained into me to be so intimidated to ask for the day off. My shoulder is killing me today, and I don't want to go to work, but I can't muster up the courage to send a text about it
