Background: I worked in a beauty spa in my small town (i wont say the name due to my town being so small and i don't want it to come back to me) This spa is “commission based” i say it like that because i was still buying my product. If you are not familiar with the difference between booth rent or commission based in the beauty industry.
Commission base is when your employer is supposed to buy all the products you will use in your services. With that the employer will take a % out of each service, Mine was 65% me/ 35% to my boss.
Booth rent is when you are responsible for buying all the products you use. You get to keep everything that is made during each service tips and everything . You will just pay for a chair/ bed to perform said services on, For example I am paying 25$ a day.
Let me just tell you how sketched out this place was. She would let one of the staff members. Who is only a licensed medical assistant. She is not licensed to any beauty services. List of said services that she was performing. Lash lift and tints, brow wax, full face wax. pedicures, tattoos, piercings, permanent eyeliner, eyebrow microblading. Also to add on this said medical assistant has been turned in 3 different times to the state.
She would also let some random girl come in and perform pedicures and nail services. I live in Utah and all these services you have to be a licensed cosmetologist, master aesthetician, or aesthetician.
Okay when I started at this spa I was buying out of my own pocket the products I needed. So for the year I was working there I spent over $2,000 there and I was only getting 65% of my services. Not to sound money hungry or anything but I thought I should be getting more than that. I brought this up to siad boss but I was not allowed to go above 65% in take home. After about 6 months of being at this spa I was working 5 days a week booked with appointments for about 2 weeks in advance. Seems logical that I should be getting more take home. Off of me alone she was making roughly $300-$400 a week. I did bring up switching me to booth rent in order to make it fair with how much money i was spending but she told me to face that i had to quit and find a new job. I stayed for another 6 months. She has been caught stealing tips or cutting my checks short. I did call her out. On top of everything I was working as her front desk girl and also cleaning she paid me under the table for both of those.
I am not the only one who has had problems with her as a boss. The teeth whitening girl will say her name hailey. Hailey also noticed that her tips were going missing and she caught the boss 3 different times. She was able to switch to booth rent after a while of calling her out. Once booth rent was agreed the starting price of the booth rent was $25 but then jumped up to $35 and then right before she left it jumped all the way up to $45 a day that is way too much for our little town to be paying in.
Our nail tech didn't have too much going on due to her only being there for maybe 2 months but she did notice that some of her tools and products were going missing. Which I might add on I did see that the boos and one other girl was getting her to the station to take stuff.
In total this business has lost over 6 staff members, 3 lash techs, 3 nail techs, and 1 massage therapist.
So i was just wondering what i should do?
