I’ve been working at a laboratory for almost 3 months, and I was promised a raise after 90 days. I currently make $15/hr doing a 9-5 job that requires a degree in biology. A couple things have happened and I now have much more responsibility than I did initially, so I am trying to negotiate a raise to $20/hr. I haven’t heard the verdict yet, and I doubt it’ll happen, but the entire thing has made me so nervous.
A couple minutes ago I took a step back and kind of appreciated the absurdity of it. I have a college degree in biology, and I make $15/hr. I have a college degree in biology, and I’m literally nervous about asking for less than $40k a year. I usually work about 44-46 hours a week and am about to move into a new apartment ($550 a month for my part), and will probably pick up a second job to afford it more comfortably since I have other bills to worry about. What the fuck was the point of college if I’m still living in a cheap apartment with a roommate and have to work two jobs?? I thought that was the whole point of college, to avoid all that??
Stepping back, this shit is dumb as fuck, and that’s about all I can say on it.
