I am the Head of my department of a company handling 60 Million in Annual revenue. I hate being the head because all the problems become my problem. I try to be a good manager because previously I had a good manager and I learned from him that my problems are mine and that I must not transfer to my co-workers and anyone who is working under me and that THEIR problems are mine too to handle. “The buck stops here” applies to this situation to a certain degree (English is my 4th language so please excuse if wrong saying).
I see here constantly that managers do not know how to manage. A good manager knows how to… MANAGE. It's literally in the title.
And it's always in benefit of the manager to be a good boss. I, as a manager, have to work 8 AM till 10 PM and I constantly work even at home on weekends. I get paid to take these headaches. One of my department people who was new asked me if she can take some work home and I simple told her that no. All of this work can wait till her normal time and that home life is for her to relax and enjoy. I do this to make sure that she isn't burned out and that in the rare occasion when I do need her or anyone else, she knows that it's a rarity. Can I abuse them being salaried employees and make them sit late everyday? Sure. But why? My team members love working with me (at least I think they do). They know I have their back. They know that their lives is stress free because I block all their stresses as much as possible. The result? I get everything I ask them to do, done immediately. I know that they are giving me good results and every year, without fail, I am increasing my entire company's production by a lot (45% in 2021, and we are set to increase production by 30% this year… and 75% of the production is directly from my department).
I do not mean for this to be a praising post to myself. This is simply to point out that if you're not a manager, you don't get to take a managers stress. If you tomorrow become a manager, you better be ready to take on the responsibilities or be OK with being a bad manager. Being a good manager and being good to your team members will give you amazing result.
