Employer hasn’t been paying health insurance premiums… Whoopsie

I'm married with four kids. Until recently we got our health insurance coverage through my wife's job. But she recently switched to a new job for more pay, but they don't offer health insurance. So I enrolled at my job. Everything seemed fine. I did all of the things I was supposed to. I received our coverage packet and our insurance cards in the mail. We've even been to our respective doctors and picked up medications since then. But my wife called me at work today to tell me that one of our kids had to cancel a doctor's appointment for a new medical issue that just popped up because our coverage isn't valid.

The doctor's office apparently said that no one has been paying the premium.

I got ahold of the person who runs payroll at my job, and she said that on her end it looks like I'm only enrolled in dental. When I look online at the website where we manage our benefits, it says I'm covered under health as well.

My employer recently executed two big rounds of layoffs: one right before Christmas (because of course) and one last month. Apparently they laid off the person who manages our benefits, along with a whole host of HR duties, and no one there now has any idea what's what. I was told they'd have to “do some research.”

Meanwhile, we're here with no coverage. Oh, and I was told that I haven't been paying my part of the premiums either, so there's a decent chance that when this gets ironed out, whenever that may be, I'll have to pay those back premiums.

I am unhappy at the moment.
