Wife’s employer is asking employees to donate PTO to sick coworker

My wife's coworker has a “serious illness” according to an email from HR. Rather than working with the employee to take advantage of family/medical leave, the employee's own PTO, and then just giving a paid leave of absence, the company has asked other employees (who get very little PTO, btw) to donate PTO to this sick coworker. How embarrassing for the company.
