Resignation Letter when you are being forced to quit a job, but you don’t want to quit the people

My department is in the middle of a corporate “realignment” (read: they don’t like my boss because he’s outspoken and put someone over him who does not know how to do our job). The sad result is that despite the fact that our team is full of wonderful, qualified people who work hard, get along wonderfully (read: laughing so hard until we cry), and have deep experience and passion for the work, the company ultimately is fucking us all by second guessing the work we do and cutting out entire parts of our (government regulated) processes, because they can’t be bothered to understand the niche work we do in this industry. Understandably, since the new boss came in, the team is all in the process of fleeing because despite the fact that we love our boss, we all have professional pride, as well as the fact that we’re being put…

Understandably, since the new boss came in, the team is all in the process of fleeing because despite the fact that we love our boss, we all have professional pride, as well as the fact that we’re being put in the position where we will be asked to (essentially) falsify federal documents.

The following is my resignation letter. I hope I did him justice. (Before I sent it, I delete the part about how Mr J tried to promote me TWICE and corporate management shot him down both times.)

Dear Mr. J,

Please accept this letter as formal notification that I am resigning from my position as Senior _____. My last day will be Friday, 11 November 2022.

From the bottom of my heart, I have truly appreciated the opportunity to work with and for you for the past several years. Together, and under your leadership, we have literally done the impossible, passing the government audit, working valiantly to fix the processes, policies and procedures as a lessons learned as a result of the audit, created, developed and implemented procedures to keep this organization safe from future audit scrutiny, trained countless employees & interns in our work processes, and worked hard to boost morale in the effort to create a warm, happy and safe environment for all of those on this team. At one point, the happiness, laughter and joy that exuded from our team started to attract others from the organization to want to join our team–but that is only one example detailing the fantastic group dynamic we had.

All of this is a testament to you as being strong in leadership and strong in focus. These were such happy times and I can firmly attribute and credit this joy as coming from you. You really tried to help us and carry us through the darkest of times and laughed with us during the happiest moments.

Don’t forget the time when we pranked you on Microsoft Teams by finding your mobile phone ringtone and played it during a meeting to trick you into picking up your phone.

Don’t forget the time when we secretly created a bingo card unbeknownst to you of all of the hilarious and common catchphrases you have like “Holy Cannoli” and “Whatta Whatta!” and played it for a solid week to boost morale.

Don’t forget the time when I took a photo of you and created a repeating tile background and shared it with my teammates so that we all changed our Microsoft Teams backdrop photo to you with your huge grin and afro from high school.

Don’t forget the time when we all chipped in as a team for Christmas and got you a ticket dispenser for “Take-a-Number” system after we threatened to do it for months.

And I know you’ll never forget the time we waited until you left the office the day before your birthday and we filled it chest high with balloons, big and small. You were comedically popping balloons for over a week.

These and many more times I will never forget, because these things transcend the workplace and end up being a part of us. In addition to all you taught me about our work and regulatory knowledge, I will certainly take all of these moments with me throughout my career. I am saddened that I must be moving on, and will miss you and the amazing camaraderie that we have fostered and enjoyed.

You know that I will do everything possible to wrap up my duties and train other team members over the next two weeks. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help during this transition.

I wish you continued health, wellness & personal success. I know we will stay touch in the future because you won’t be rid of me that easily.

Sincerely,
u/LeRat0nLaveur
