Today was shitty.
I had to deal with this guy going around talking shit about me all day to this all white guy department we're in. He's never worked in a mill before too, he used to work golf courses. I was really puzzled about how he got the job, because he flat out didn't know shit. He's been low key trying to intimidate me by bragging about how he knows and lives around everyone in the department. It's blatantly obvious the southern good ol' boy channel is the only reason he got the job. He really thought that he was going to nestle into the ranks, force me out, and then turn our office into his own little racist fiefdom. Well, it didn't work out like that.
The GM for the whole mill is a black guy from NY. I pulled him aside and told him the whole story and he was just straight up like “I believe you.” I was really honest with him, I said something like “I'm sorry I didn't tell you the day it happened. Honestly I'm just burned out on all this maga racist stuff here in the last few years and I was gonna just slide out of here. I have people calling me with other job offers, if this dude stays here I'm probably out of here. I'm like this close to moving back to NY.”
He said something like “Don't worry about taking time to think about it before you came and talked to me. It's a big deal, you had to weigh a lot of things out. We definitely don't want you to go. Don't let this guy win. If you leave he wins. That's how they always win.”
He made me feel a lot better right off the bat when he told me he believed me. We're both living in the same America. Not to mention the asshole guy is basically a Maga cartoon character, you can't miss him. The GM asked me if he had done anything else on top of him saying the n word and I had some stories. we have some Mexican contractors doing a big job here on site. They have to sign in at our office when they get here. Every time they come in he starts speaking to them in a mocking racist impression of a Mexican accent to their fucking faces. He makes a big show of it. This is what will probably get him fired for sure, he did that shit in front of a room full of people.

I think my boss wants to keep me around because he can know for sure I'm not a turd. Honestly if it doesn't turn into a shitshow after this I may stay, this job was a big jump up for me. It just sucks that I was immediately thrusted into a battleground. I'm afraid it will always be the case in Charleston, no matter where I go.
