But in truth, the gig economy serves to strip away the last meager bit of employee protections and “benefits” employers used to provide, and it helps to insulate corporate responsibility and liability if everyone is purportedly an “independent contractor”. Eliminating pensions, 401ks, health insurance, etc., from the payroll serves to increase corporate profits.
