My boss wants me to start following up on work emails at home “as a favor” and text updates with no on-call pay. Isn’t this illegal??

I've been working part-time for my boss for several years now. Today he announced that he wants me to start checking on emails and following up on them from home “at least every other day”. I asked him about if it's going to be counted as on-call pay and he just told me to jot my hours if they're 30-60 minutes and if it only takes a few minutes, to do so “as a favor” to him. Then he said he wants quick text updates as to what happened with those email follow-ups. I was so flabbergasted that I blankly nodded as he left but now I'm fuming. This just happened 10 minutes ago. But I don't have any references to why this is illegal (he would ask). Isn't there some law against this??
