Thoughts on “work dinners”

I don’t mean dinners to specifically discuss work, but rather when your team (boss included) goes out after work to socialize, but it’s organized by the boss, not as a group of friend-coworkers. Last night I had to go to one. Dinner was paid for, my time was not. The people were nice, but I feel like I’m being obligated to spend the little time I have to decompress from work in a setting where I can’t (aka with my boss). I’m not looking for thoughts on my specific situation. Just curious on other people’s thoughts and experiences with after work non-paid outings.
