“Don’t expect a raise if you don’t put in 100%”

How true is this? In the sense that, would a top performer really receive more money? I hear this as a common argument when people say don’t put in more than 80% or you’ll just be given more work with no raise (which has happened to me a lot so I make a point to work slower so I don’t die from stress) But the argument to me doesn’t make sense because the point is (in my opinion) that even if you do put in over 100% all that happens is you receive the same raise (or no raise) as everyone else but now you’re doing more work. To me, it seems the notion is that no longer are you guaranteed a raise, promotion if you work hard. Seems like the majority of the time it only happens if you’re the office pet….but maybe I am wrong? It seems like…
