I work at and live at an apartment complex as one of two maintenance techs, plus the manager.
My current issue is I am the only one of 3 employees who pays any portion of rent now, part of the job is to live on site for emergencies and rent is compensated 100%. And this only started recently when I transferred from a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom because my fiancée was moving in with me. The only way the owner of the property would approve the transfer was if I paid the difference between the two apartments. Now it really isnt a bad deal, especially for how much rent is, I know there are soooo many others struggling to pay the bullshit rent prices. But what fucking gets me is their logic= because I am not married and dont have a family (kids) I should not need a two bedroom apartment. My two coworkers have the 2 bedroom apartments, both are married, both had a kid living with them but have since moved out years ago. So by the same logic they should have to pay some rent because they not longer need to extra room for family.
I know this for a fact because my manager explained it to me when I was given the go ahead to move into the new apartment. And that I should be “grateful for the deal” because the owner could have demanded more.
I hope I'm making sense explaining this, anytime I've explained this to people outside of my work I get the same responses of “That's not right”
Its just becoming more and more intolerable to stay working here, I'm planning with my fiancée after we're married to move and leave this job so there is a light at the end of the tunnel for me. But the arrogance and bullshit the company and management do its starting to break me down faster. I just want to know if this can be made into an actual case against the company if things get worse and I have something in my back pocket to use against them.
And apologies if I'm being too vague, I have a fear someone will read this and it gets back to me.
