EDIT: so I could visit my family for the first time* (initially wrote this in the first person as her but went in another direction)
She’s been working at this company for approximately 1.5 years. They’ve generally been good to her besides false promises around salary and promotion (another story I won’t get into).
In February I informed my supervisor that I had plans to help my boyfriend take care of some medical issues with his family in a South Asian Country (we live in the US). He said “since you’re not moving their permanently you don’t have to do anything extra. I’m confirming now, but you should be good to go!”
Over the last 10 months she’s met with him each week and he has only assured her that her trip is going to be amazing. Asking her what she’s going to do while there, confirming time zone changes, everything in between.
Today he messages her saying “HR just told me that US employees are not permitted to work abroad due to tax reasons” 10 days before were supposed to leave.
He told her that her options are to take unpaid leave or cancel the trip.
Any chance this is a suit? I’m just fuming. If we had known that her working from abroad wasn’t an option, we wouldn’t have bought these tickets, we wouldn’t have planned for the trip to be so long, we wouldn’t have made so many arrangements to make this all work.
Now it’s either quit or come back to us with your tail between your legs after not getting paid for 7 weeks.
Seems deplorable
