I posted to r/AmItheAsshole regarding if I felt it was unreasonable to basically ask me to work 16 hours. I work at a thrift store, and I won’t go into detail instead I’ll link the post here for the back story
I have been in contact with my boss, and was told no one is able to cover for me this Friday. I received a message that after this Friday, I will not receive coverage. I have left early a few times to cover emergency calls as I work for a rural first responder service, and at times was the only one available. The most recent reason I had to leave was for a pediatric trauma where I was the only rescuer available. I had forgotten my key to get into store on a different set of car keys, so had to ask another person to lock up for me.
I feel that I am being treated unfairly, as another coworker does these talks on farm equipment safety after her spouse died in a farm accident. She is allowed time off and coverage to do these talks. I am not allowed coverage to focus on my schooling. I’ve let them know in advance if I have something come up, but for the most part I rarely miss work.
For the record, I have only left early 3 times to respond to an emergency, and came in late once because a call came in for a cardiac arrest. They told me they had no issue if I had to leave early, and I will only leave if the call is a life or death emergency or one that requires more than one responder such as a car crash.
How do I handle this situation? Some people on r/AmItheAsshole said I’m being a bit entitled, as they don’t owe me their time, which is true however, I’ve dropped everything to cover for someone if they need it when it was my day off. TIA for any advice!
