My (F/26/Canada) employers will do everything not to pay me overtime. I’m a lab technician and there is always work to be done, to the extent that our full-time employees can’t seem to keep up with the influx of patients in our care. For any overtime I do, I need authorization by a superior that I was required to exceed my regular workload of 40 hours per week. If I clock in 5 minutes early to get a head start, I am not paid for those 5 minutes. If I take a break longer than the 15 paid minutes allotted to me, even by 1 minute, I am deducted from my pay. This drives me absolutely crazy. The other day I was asked to come in early because we were drowning in work. I agreed and clocked in at 7:26 AM. Today I check my timesheet and they adjusted my clock in time to 7:30. I’m exasperated and I can’t figure out how to address this or if to address it all. It’s been brought up to superiors in internal meetings before but it hasn’t made any impact. I would love to know if I should let this go or if there’s any type of constructive action I could take to protect my rights as an employee? I feel like I’m being exploited on a daily basis and it makes me resent my employers.
