A friend of mine works entertainment at NCL, this morning the company declared that all workers were banned from areas of the ship where guests were with zero notice. Their contracts define these spaces as “privileges”, but they’ve always been available to staff.
Since the ships were designed with dual use of these spaces in mind, this means that the staff are now restricted to a 10 person gym (on a ship of over 500 crew), the staff halls, a staff mess that’s too tiny to serve the whole staff at once (where the food is typically terrible), their workspace, and their rooms. They are also now obliged to clean their own rooms, but they have no access to cleaning supplies or to washers and dryers.
Several entertainment shows are already on strike on the ocean against the measure, staff are panicking, entertainment companies are screwed.
Meanwhile, Norwegian’s ships are basically floating prisons for their workers.
Despicable.
