Maternity Leave, is this illegal?

This was years ago but I just wanna know now that I’ve found reddit. I hope I’m posting in the right place: When I was given my due date it was 3-28, which is what I gave my employer. I went into labor on 3-20, but in the middle of the night so I called on 3-21 and told corporate that I was in labor and needed to start my mat leave early. The man on the phone from HR said that since my due date was 3-28 they couldn’t start my leave and if I didn’t show up the next day I would be fired. I screamed at him about how illegal that was and I’ll be getting a lawyer (which I was in labor during this so I was being very mean.) I think I made him cry, but they did start my leave. After having been on leave for only 3 weeks they called me and said if I didn’t come back early they were going to demote me. Idc about telling y’all the company. It was Family Dollar right after having been bought out by Dollar Tree.
