I had a FT remote job as an editor for a publishing company in Texas. For security reasons, I had to do all work on a PC they provided. Near the end of two successful and problem-free months, my manager sent me an email requesting a Zoom meeting with her. When we met, she said she wanted to review a document that I worked on and approved for publication. She shared her screen and pulled up the document in question. It was filled with misspellings, grammatical errors, and many examples of illiteracy. In addition, it contained racist language throughout. I told her that she had seen my stellar editing work for two months and that it was impossible that I worked on or even had seen the document. She pulled up the document history which had my name attached to it. The editing date was one week before I even had the company PC. For reasons I can’t fathom, someone had entered the file and inserted my name as the editor. She refused to accept the obvious impossibility of my working on the document. At the conclusion of our meeting, I sent her the following email: “I resign.” One year later, I still can’t figure out why I was undermined.
