A juicery conned me into working a shift, didn’t pay me properly.

I applied to this “ethical” “natural” small-business juicery place in my little city in vermont (not naming names) as a college student. they told me that they were flexible with the hours and that they would need a weekend shift and a weekday shift in the job listing. I applied for PART TIME. They knew I was enrolled in 18 credits. I was interviewed and the interview went great and they told me that the next step was to work a shift that was fully paid to see how I work (it was procedural for the store). I agreed only because the person there was highly optimistic that I was going to be hired and I made it apparent that I would be quitting my prior job in order to fit this working shift into my schedule. so I worked the shift, and they basically had me do labor all…

I agreed only because the person there was highly optimistic that I was going to be hired and I made it apparent that I would be quitting my prior job in order to fit this working shift into my schedule. so I worked the shift, and they basically had me do labor all day I literally was juicing and canning fruit all day for the store. they told me that it went very well and that I was going to be hired. they wrote me a check for $12/hour, despite them saying the pay was $18. They said the extra $6 was tips and they weren’t sure if i got them so have this check for now and scrap it, they’ll write me a new one if it includes tips. So I quit my other job. They did not text me back for two weeks despite me constantly reaching out. then, they reached out to me and told me that they could only offer me a position if I worked 32 hours a week or four shifts including two weekend shifts. at this point i told them i was upset since i was deceived. i asked about the tips because obviously that seems illegal. they said i can get the tip money and they would write me a check. so I lost the original check by that time since i didn’t cash it since i was told not to. and they did tell me to scrap it before. they’re refusing to write me a new check and only want to pay me the difference even though I never cashed the original check. i’ve been texting with the manager and she still isn’t responding to me and hasn’t responded to me until after the first maybe eight text messages. I said that I don’t want to have to do this but I’ve tried to be patient and you guys have taken advantage of me but I’m gonna have to contact the department of labor. she then accused me of being rude and threatening her. obviously that should not be a threat if they have nothing to be afraid of. theyre taking advantage of workers paying them under the table to work singular shifts and do labor for the store.
