I’m a manager and one of my employees came in this morning and asked to use the printer. No problem. I see her print something off and she’s unhappy. I asked her if I could help, but she was a bit sheepish.
I could see the piece of paper she was holding was so clearly a resume in format so I asked, and she nervously said it was. Asked if I could read it, she said ok. It was ok, but it needed some work.
She told me she never learned how to write one in school and she had no idea how to compose a proper one but she was scouted for a job and was interviewing after her shift.
I asked if I could help, and she said yes. I locked the door so the nosey coworkers could be assisted with minding their business, and I completely revamped her entire resume. Then I pulled her in and explained what I did, why I did it, and what the basics of a resume are.
You bet your ass she walked off her shift and nailed the interview, securing the job. I’m so happy for her! I told her the second I saw the resume that she can always come to me and I’ll never judge her. This is just a job, and I’m here to help with whatever, always. I also told her she deserved better, and I was proud of her. I’ve always told her she deserved more, and now she’s on her way!
She got scouted, so honestly this is all on her and her excellence, but I wanted to give her a good base resume for when she goes somewhere else, eventually.
Only her boyfriend and I know, I believe, and who knows if he will stay now. Our business is going to crumble because she’s one of the few people who knows how to do and does her job, plus she works an insane amount of hours. I can’t wait to see her hand in her two weeks, though. I hope myself and several others are hot on her heels because crap jobs with no raises and upward mobility aren’t it, and neither is holding others back from reaching their potential.
A job pays for your essentials, not your loyalty or devotion. Always push others to pursue more and do better. Everyone deserves to have people pushing them to meet their potential!
