Apologies in advance, on mobile. I was “laid off” in October, and was told verbally by my direct report that I was being let go for company restructuring where my role was eliminated. When I got my paperwork though, the layoff box wasn’t checked and my termination was labeled as a “discharge” with no other cause given. The company is in CA, so it’s an at-will state, and I didn’t want to be difficult so I just signed it. I was still eligible for benefits because there was no misconduct so I just tell interviewers I was laid off. One of the companies does background checks though, and I was wondering if this mismatch would in any way lead to me not getting offered the job. I’ve asked my previous employer multiple times why the paperwork doesn’t match what I was told with no response. Is it just corporate BS to save money on unemployment insurance? I’m really nervous that this situation will keep me from getting a really great job.
