Employer wants me to pay for a faulty disposable vape.

I work at a smoke shop in South Texas. One day a customer came in wanting a disposable vape as usual. I ring him up and let him know to try out the vape before he leaves the store. The purpose of this is so that I can exchange it if it does not work. With thousands of vapes being sold, theres bound to be 1 that is faulty. Well this just so happened to be a faulty vape. No big deal, I just exchange it for the customer and fill out the paperwork as usual! Fast forward to yesterday. I received a call from my manager stating that they were making sure all the disposables that were faulty are actually faulty. The issue here is the disposable vape that i had exchanged previously came up as working just fine without an issue. My manager tells me that the regional manager wants me to pay out of pocket for it.

Is this legal? What should my next steps be?
