For sake of anonymity, my friend was asking me about this and was too nervous to come out and ask and now I’m genuinely curious as well because the way the manager did things messed up quite a bit of things in our plans and my friends plans as well.
(California, part time, server)
My friend works at a restaurant that has a corporate (for scale of the business) and has a manager that was transferred to the restaurant about a month or two ago. Since then the manager has been scheduling people the wrong days, telling everyone to find a cover themselves. Manager schedules one week at a time, at about a week and a half prior to the dated week.
The restaurant uses a scheduling program that allows workers to set their availability for however long they need it to be so there shouldn’t be any surprises regarding scheduling because you know what days you said you can work and if you need that day off, you would need to request it off accordingly (as expected)
So the issue is my friend and I have an event we will be going to (we paid a non refundable deposit to be a part of it), and it’s on a day my friend had blocked off permanently due to their other obligations and work stuff. So because it’s blocked off obviously they weren’t expecting to work that day but the schedule came out and they’re scheduled that exact day that was blocked off.
This isn’t a one time issue, a bunch of other coworkers have been having issues regarding this type of thing apparently.
Managers attitude on all this is basically “not my problem once the schedule comes out, find a cover or there will be conveniences”
What can my friend do about this? How do they approach this? What can they say?
I think my friend has a decent case because the scheduling program is set and nothing has changed, literally couldn’t control the outcome of the manager scheduling them the exact day they had closed off for the longest time, and my friend has been following all the scheduling demands the manager has been demanding for. Can they use their accrued sick hours?
Also in the past the manager has said that he didn’t care if someone was sick or couldn’t come to work, find a cover or consequence.
Would really appreciate the input, a bunch of the coworkers want to put in an hr complaint but my friend wanted to handle this on their own privately first.
