Hello! I live in the USA & recently left a really crappy job. I had lots of issues with admin over a company issued iPad before but this really does take the cake. I was issued a company iPad and literally on the last day of my employment with them, I kid you not, the screen got cracked (still am not sure how this happened, as it was not cracked in the morning when I used it & cannot recall dropping it).
I figured I’d be responsible for providing the money to replace the screen, as in the employee handbook it says it is the employees responsibility to maintain & upkeep the iPad. When I returned it, HR would not provide me a quote or estimate and I left them my personal email to contact me.
Days go by and nobody reaches out to me, I attempted to contact payroll and HR once the paycheck was substantially late (3 weeks); no response. It wasn’t until I reached out to my former supervisor & begged for help getting them to contact me that payroll finally replied.
They proceeded to then tell me that they deducted $250 of my final paycheck to cover the “screen repair” of a gen 3 iPad & that they had just mailed the check.
When I received the check, it was a handwritten check with my name spelled incorrect on it & there was no receipt or bill telling me what my money was used for. Nor was there any sort of explanation as to why it was so costly, as the cracks were superficial.
It all just felt really gross & sketchy to me. I didn’t know iPad screens costed so much to replace & really just wish someone would’ve communicated with me before taking my money. Is this legal? If it’s legal, do you think it’s ethical?
