I am fucking done.
To concisely tell everyone what I’m currently dealing with…
4 interviews over one month. After this I receive an email requesting references plus my salary history for the past 3 years with yearly wage vs. bonus details.
I live in a state where it is very much illegal to request salary history during hiring process. However, I am smart enough and know my rights. I replied back with references and stated “in regards to the salary history question, I find this request to be a bit unusual. Are you able to provide me with a salary band for the offered position?”
After this, every email from them going forward doesn’t mention their request as if they didn’t even ask for it. Nor did I ever get any sort of number or range on what they were looking to offer for the position.
The next week they call my references, which according to them were “exceptional”, they requested I have another interview, for a total of 5. I have the interview with someone who wasn’t even in the department I would’ve been working in, and when I got off the video call I had a gut feeling that left a bad taste in my mouth. The next week after a follow-up I’m told I didn’t get the position.
I’m thinking it’s because I know my rights and didn’t give them my salary history. They were looking to low-ball someone that doesn’t know their rights and answered the request (which makes it legal). I’m livid and done with having my time wasted to make other candidates “look better”.
I’m considering taking legal action because I have their request in writing in an email.
I’m officially DONE with being taken advantage of any longer.
