This might be better suited for r/legaladvice but I dont really want to take legal action. I am currently the only employee at a mom and pop shop. They are good to me for the most part so I wouldn't want to sue.
I have a long story but basically to make it short I found out the last couple weeks the security cameras record audio. My only coworker who just got fired (not pertaining to the cameras because he was apparently told when he first worked there before my time) Before he was let go he vented all his concerns about the company and did tell “mom and pop” that I was very upset learning the security cameras record audio.
I spoke my peace, the convo went as follows:
“That's not cool and it's not legal!”
“Sullensparrow, I told you this already”
“No, you didnt.”
“Yes, I absolutely did!”
“I would have remembered that, do you have it in writing?”
“No! But I contacted my lawyer already, and I have been confirmed in the fact that this is not illegal.”
(I started to get emotional) “I would never sue you guys, but I'm really upset about this because I know I never gave my consent to record me.”
“Well you did.”
And that was that. It's been a week now.
Basically TLDR; I never consented to having audio recorded on the security cameras, my boss insisted I did. I dont desire to sue, but I'm pissed. I dont want this to happen anymore in the future and I'm at a loss how to fix it.
Edit: 20 mins in and I've been enlightened to the unfortunate fact that my state (Maine) has a “one party consent” law so I have no grounds no matter how “wrong” I feel it is, but I do hope my employer will consider the option to tell future hires that they will be recorded because I guess if it's not legally wrong here (news to me) it's still morally wrong imo.
