Antiwork

Just had a company meeting. Asked to work harder to maybe get raises later this year that won’t match inflation.

Such a bad comedy joke. Much of my office, about 10 people, commutes between 45 min or an hour and the rising gas prices have hit hard. Several people approached management over the week including myself asking for concessions or ways to make things more agreeable such as partial work from home and were told it would be considered with a meeting to come Thursday. Thursday has come and I am so annoyed, so I want to share some highlights. Management said that billable hours must increase from around 2000 (been around there since start of covid, this is a service industry) to around 3200 before raises can be further discussed. The raises themselves will not necessarily match cost of living changes or inflation changes as that is outside of projected budget. At the same time, a new marketing campaign will be started to reach new clients and a business…

Such a bad comedy joke. Much of my office, about 10 people, commutes between 45 min or an hour and the rising gas prices have hit hard. Thursday has come and I am so annoyed, so I want to share some highlights.

  1. Management said that billable hours must increase from around 2000 (been around there since start of covid, this is a service industry) to around 3200 before raises can be further discussed.

  2. The raises themselves will not necessarily match cost of living changes or inflation changes as that is outside of projected budget.

  3. At the same time, a new marketing campaign will be started to reach new clients and a business development team will be hired to find out how to run more lean and profitable.

  4. Working from home is not on the table because having a place for clients or employees to come in is important for the image of the company and the presence in the community.

  5. To show understanding, management will be raffling off one gas card each Friday with the raffle open to office staff. Insulting, right?

Essentially – they want everyone to work harder not for nothing, but for the promise of maybe later getting slightly less screwed than they are now.

Just unbelievable. I worked on my resume earlier in the week and I'll be trying to find somewhere else asap. I know my coworkers are of same mind. Just hoping now we all find something new and can leave around the same time to really make a point.

Good luck to everyone out there. Businesses need to learn and they don't wait to. They will need to be dragged kicking and screaming into a market where labor has power.
