Hey peeps! I also posted on r/legaladvice, but also curious if anyone here has had a similar experience and what they've done about it
Me and my old boss didn't get along throughout the last months of my last gig. Because of the way he treated the team, I ended up losing respect for him causing us to butt heads on tasks and whatnot. I ended up telling him I was gonna be gone from the studio in 2 months, so he decided to fire me the very next week. This was March 2021.
Now, in my exit interview, HR told me I was eligible for unemployment so I took advantage of it for the next 6 months receiving about 9k in benefits.
Last month, to my shock I receive a letter from EDD saying that I owe back all the money I received because I was disqualified for “speaking to a co-worker in an abusive and profane manner” Sure, I wasn't a yes man and we disagreed as two human beings sometimes do, but I never attacked his character or “abused” him in any way. My whole team would vouch for me, and speaking to some of my ex-coworkers this guy is now on probation for his attitude.
Right now I'm in touch with a senate representative who's working with me talking with EDD, and also in touch with my old CEO trying to get some clarification as to why the company said that about me, when it's not true. It just looks like the company is trying to get out of paying my unemployment.
Any thoughts on this would be awesome, thanks a lot guys.
