How much money would an average joe need to not have to work for 20 years and still live a middle class lifestyle?

I'm curious. Might wanna start investing What gets me really fucked up is that I refuse to work for a boss (ie I wanna be self-employed) because I refuse to make some rich boomer 10x richer for every cent I make
