Employment offer jerked away from me days before I started

This happened just days ago and it's honestly sent me spiraling into an even worse depression than I've already been in. I've been out of work for almost a year now with various health issues and recently I finally became healthy enough to try working again. I ended up getting a nice offer from a jewelry store just down the street from my house, the work seemed perfect for me, everyone there was friendly and I passed their interview with flying colors. I went in on Friday to sign paperwork relating to me beginning work there and was told I'd receive info on when to come in on Monday, my start date. The next day I abruptly get a text from their hiring manager (who I'd not actually met during this process) that went as follows: “Good morning [name], this is [asshole hiring manager] from [store].

The next day I abruptly get a text from their hiring manager (who I'd not actually met during this process) that went as follows:

“Good morning [name], this is [asshole hiring manager] from [store]. We have been trying to get in touch of (sic) you to sign the Background authorization letter, so that we can run your background. The offer that was extended to you was pending background. That time has past. The position is no longer available. Good luck to you in your future endeavors. Please do not show up on Monday. Thanks.

I was absolutely baffled because again, I had JUST been in the day before to sign paperwork related to me starting (including them assuring me that they were running my background at that moment) and texted him back as soon as I saw the message (which was sent early in the morning), and got no response. I called the store, and was told by an employee who answered the phone that he had been out for a week (???) but he'd be back in the store in a few hours and they'd have him call me. No call came through and I was completely ghosted. Obviously, I didn't start on Monday.

I'm crushed as I was genuinely excited to have ANY job that didn't involve standing around at a cash register all day, and at every step of the way they really made it seem like they were excited to have me on board. I can't even tell if I was just being jerked around the whole time, if there was some kind of miscommunication, or if I really did fuck up somewhere along the way and it's my fault. I'm right back to just sitting at home playing video games and eating junk food all day and I honestly just want to die. I don't know how we're supposed to even bother trying to get employment if companies can just do this shit and leave us dangling without any ability to buy necessities or afford rent. I don't know what to do. I'm trying to apply to more jobs online now and it's so soul crushing I just want to curl up and cry.
