Why do companies think our lives are dedicated to them?

I requested unpaid time off (20 days) and got denied. They said they would allow 10. Did I ask for 10? I asked for 20? What exactly makes them think that my entire life is dedicated to clocking in and out every week? What makes them think that me traveling for the first time since the pandemic started is going to be flexible to accommodate their wants (it’s not a need-they are staffed in a way that would be fine with me gone for 20 days). Whose idea was it that we could just allow companies to tell us what to do with our personal lives? I work over 2,000 hours a year for them and when asked for 120 hours off, they tell me that I can’t. 6% of my working hours, that’s all I ask for. Actually, given the hours I am actually working right now it is more like 88-90 hours, which is 4.4-4.5% of working hours. I’m not even asking for it to be paid. I don’t use the bathroom for more than 5 minutes a shift, I don’t take breaks, I’ve been told I’m a good employee. I just don’t understand why American culture is so fucking against people having lives and experiencing traveling to different cultures and having a source of joy once a year. I just don’t get it.
*side note- I requested June 10-30 off. I’m not going to tell them until I put my notice in, but you can be damn sure I’ll be taking june 10-forever off now with this company.
