Looking for Assistance

I work in a hospital (obviously). Contracts are negotiable due to experience, shifts, productivity and so on. We have been told that we are not allowed to discuss our salaries with each other because of this. And partners in the group should not tell newer docs what to ask for in contracts because “things are really tight.” But this cannot possibly be legal, right? I’d imagine I work a different job than many of you folks, but the laws about discussing salaries and benefits is a universal one, right?
