Apparently HLIS is a bad idea in America for some reason.

I work in HR for a MNC that is spread across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. So our Indian offices have had a policy of HLIS(housing loan interest subsidy) and VLIS (vehicle loan interest subsidy). Basically, the company pays you a part of your housing loan or vehicle loan interest. The policy was so that every employee would afford a home and a vehicle. The result, every employee in the company has a home and a vehicle(most have 2). For a country like India, this is an amazing concept. Attrition is very low and morale is high. The result, every employee in the company has a home and a vehicle(most have 2). For a country like India, this is an amazing concept. Attrition is very low and morale is high.

So we were recently trying to expand this policy across all our locations.

The American head was dead against it. Apparently HLIS is unheard of over there and introducing something like this could disrupt labour demands. Also, since this won't be part of the regular compensation, they view it as unnecessary expense that they can't even advertise as part of the pay. Also, since all Americans already own 2 vehicles on average and most have no intention to own a home, this wouldn't have any appeal

Long story short, the idea was vetoed and was nixed.

I don't know what to say. I still think it was a good idea for Americans.
