Hi guys. I recently spoke to a rep of a very prestigious school (PS) in CA. I'd applied for a job there months ago, but never heard back, until a month ago.
I'm currently making good money with minimal hours, so when a rep called me about the position I'd applied to months before and I found out it's paying nearly $15k less/year than I'm currently making, I told them no thanks. I didn't even let them tell me about the position. I cut right to the chase about salary so I didn't waste my time or theirs.
Yesterday I get a call and another rep for PS tells me since reaching out a month ago, the salary has increased by nearly $20k than they were offering previously, now entering into the triple digits (which is only $7k more than what I currently make). They asked me if I was now interested in reconsidering. I said “sure” and I'll be chatting with someone this afternoon to get more details.
Thing is, I looked up this position, along with the average salaries of people in the same department who already work for PS. They'd still be low balling me about $20k/year, not to mention the gender wage gap (since I'm a woman and even in this day and age am still making 84 cents to the dollar a man would make).
I'd also be taking on way more work and more hours than my current place of work, but the work could be more fulfilling than my current job, plus working for PS is a big deal and looks great on a resume.
My plan so far is to go into this chat very nonchalant (since I already have a very secure job), get more details about what the position entails, and have them sell to me. I will then point out what I know and see what they say. Who knows, maybe I'll turn them down again and in a month they'll come back with another $20k, which I know isn't guaranteed, but I'm not leaving my current job for just anything.
What do ya'll think? It's not a guarantee that I'll get the opportunity again, but I'm not hurting from where I currently am. Like anyone else, I just want a fair wage to make a living in an ever changing, inflation sucking world. I'd love to hear some thoughts and opinions.
