I was hired to pack orders full time at a place near me that sells men’s cosmetics online.
The first week went well, I worked about 37 hours and packed orders the whole time.
As the weeks went by, orders dipped due to the holiday season being over, and my hours went with that too. I went from working nearly 40 hours a week to working 8-10 hours total a week.
The job was in a warehouse on the property of the owner, which originally I thought was so cool. It was amazing to me that this guy was doing so well to afford to build this place, but the temperature in the warehouse was around 32-35°F every day. Most days I could see my own breath while I worked and I could rarely feel my fingers.
Any time I made a mistake, he would email me pretty nicely about it and say “hey, would you mind sending this order again, the customer got the wrong item” which didn’t place blame on me, but it was clearly my fault. I would apologize and repack the order. But then I would go into work the next day and his wife would come in and berate me for wasting the company money.
They would make me stamp the orders I sent with “PACKED BY (my name)” even though I was the only one packing orders….. so I was always clearly my fault.
Today she came in, didn’t even ask me how I was or anything and just started complaining to me about an order I messed up. Now….. I mess up 1 order out of every 100. All the products they make come in the exact same packaging and I occasionally grab the wrong thing as a result. I even came in and labeled everything with my own materials to help myself make less mistakes. I tried so hard to limit my mistakes and I was never thanked for labeling things.
So at the end of everything, I was working 2 hours a day for $15 an hour in freezing conditions to be berated by the owners wife for something I was already spoken to about.
On the orders I messed up, I probably cost the company 3-5 dollars when they brought in several thousand a day.
Also. Hot tip. If you ever buy a lot of products from a place and you think “oh, hmmm shipping is free cause my order is over x amount, but priority shipping is only $11 more.” Don’t do it. If the package is over 1 pound, it HAS to go priority.
