Had an interview for an interview?

I just had an zoom call with a recruiter for a company that I was pretty excited about. They seem to have a great culture, flexible, good values, transparent (and great) benefits, and on top of that their main business directly challenges a major corporation that I have some moral qualms about. The chat was going great, until she started telling me about the interview process. In order to even qualify for an interview I would need to pass a coding assessment. The last company I worked at that required this ended up being majorly toxic. They overworked and undervalued employees, claiming to care about our “family” while laying off thousands of people worldwide in 2020. I realize part of me is just lazy and doesn’t want to take another coding assessment (who even has the time or energy for homework anymore?). The other part is wondering why this is…

The other part is wondering why this is a thing? Like, I have a degree. I’ve been in the field actively working for 3 years. Why is that not enough? Why do you need to test me to see if I’m even worthy of an interview slot?

I can’t decide if this company is worth it anymore. On paper they sound great, and maybe I’m just overreacting, but I feel like this doesn’t bode well. Should I even bother applying? Or is this a deal breaker?
