I have been working at a job for which I'm very overqualified for about 6 months. It's hard work and not a lot of pay, but I was told when I took the job that I had to start at the bottom but with my work history I would move up very quickly. I don't mind hard work and I don't mind having to pay my dues at a new company to move up and I liked the district manager who I interviewed with so that was all fine.
Meanwhile, this company is bleeding employees. Fully staffed, my branch has 6 employees and a branch manager. We have been fully staffed for a total of 5 days since I started there. I've been doing the job of 3 people for 6 months straight, working 50-60 hour weeks and coming in on the weekends to make sure the work gets done. About a month ago another employee quit bringing us down to 2 employees and the branch manager. Then my branch manager quit. This had been expected since I started and the district manager had been hinting that the position was going to be mine as soon as it was open. Sure enough, the day my branch manager quit, district manager calls and says the job is mine, I just have to interview with regional manager as a formality. The turnover at my branch was supposedly the old branch managers fault and things were going to turn around now. He said regional manager will be in town next week and will interview me on Monday.
Monday comes and goes, no regional manager. I call district manager and he says definitely it will be sometime this week, he's not sure exactly when but it's just a formality anyway. 2 weeks pass and nothing. Now district manager says they have posted the branch manager position online and I have to apply but again this is all a formality. I put my application in and when I did, I noticed they have taken down several postings for my teammates empty positions that they have been repeatedly telling me they just can't get good candidates for. Essentially, they had decided not to fill those positions because I was doing it everyone else's work.
Another week passes and the last remaining employee besides myself quits. They've been flying employees in from around the country to keep this branch operating for weeks.
Now I get a call from district manager, he says that regional manager doesn't think I'm a good fit for the manager position, but they will let me interview for another role that will pay $1 more per hour than I'm currently making and my day-to-day will be essentially the same. The manager position would have been double what I currently make. I've literally never met the regional manager, they've never been to my branch, never interviewed me, never even looked at my resume. I'm literally the only fucking employee they have and have been busting my ass to keep this place running and now I “get to” interview for a bullshit made-up position for the work I already do with barely any raise while they hire someone from outside the company for a job that was supposed to be mine.
I've been interviewing with other companies all week and have been working at a much more comfortable pace. No more overtime, no more weekends no more picking up the slack. If hard work doesn't pay off, why should I work hard for you? I've already got 2 job offers and I've got my final interview for another company that WILL pay me that same rate I would be getting at the manager position next week. I can't wait to send the email directly to my regional manager that I quit and it's completely their fault that they have 0 employees for this branch. Have fun continuing to pay to fly people in from the Midwest and pay for their hotels and rental cars to keep this branch open. They can't even close the branch or they'll lose a huge contract that would really hurt the company. Good luck to whoever the new manager is going to be lol
