This post is a bit milder than your average /r/antiwork post, but it still might be fun to read.
When I left my consultancy job a year ago I switched to a smaller company where I was able to blow them away with, to my knowledge, fairly basic clean coding standards. They said that despite my complex project it was easy to understand, so the whole hiring process went very fast.
Fast forward to today, I've advocated that we REALLY need to fix our code to be up to modern standards. It's a disaster waiting to happen because we have only a handful of people who know everything about the product in and out. To somewhat fix the problem I've been writing automated tests non-stop with the promise that I'd get help from the rest of the team. To this day I haven't received any help. I calculated my pace for the past year and at this rate, it will take me 4 more years to finish. If I don't speak out or send a message to anyone I could continuously work without any interaction with anyone.
Other than that, they have promised I'd be able to innovate (more like modernize) in other activities within the company. I often talk to my brother about it and what I might be able to do in 4 months, he can easily do it in 4 days.
In terms of personal development, I feel absolutely stuck and isolated. At this rate, I know exactly what I'll be doing for the next 4 years because all I'm getting is promises but no signs of change.
