Mandatory OT

Hi all, background to start. I work at a factory as a maintenance mechanic. We have a lot of OT that’s mandated because we are short on maintainers. We work 12 hr shifts, 6-6, and we are on a 4 on 3 off 3 on 4 off schedule. They take guys from the opposite end of the week to work for the other crew to cover, and that’s the OT. They pack it full to the point of sometimes I get a day, maybe 2 off a week. My first problem is obvious, that they’re basically destroying any personal time I get to myself. My second problem, is they take all requests for time off at the beginning of the year, or need like a months notice for unpaid off time or something like that.
And tied into that second problem, is we go through the OT, days before we have to do it. Ex: working Sunday – Wednesday this week; and on Sunday or Monday is when they did OT scheduling for us, to cover for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. If I call off I get points against me or something and it can very easily lead to termination.
I’m so tired because I’ve been working these every day for the last 9 days, I get off tomorrow, have to go in Friday, off Saturday, before going in Sun – Tues, and will most likely have to work 2-3/4 of my supposed off days. The only thing that’s keeping me here right now is the money, they pay pretty well, and I’ve finally been able to claw my way out of debt a bit more since getting this job, vs the last 5 years of clawing up but continually sinking anyway.
Does anybody know of anything I can do to get out of some of this OT? Any help is appreciated thank you!
Also, having a crew meeting tonight so I’m hoping to get some points from y’all to bring up to the superiors.
