Hey everyone. I’m sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I’m having trouble figuring out what to do next, and I see a lot of people giving and receiving advice on here all the time, and I love this subreddit so why not give it a shot.
So for context, I’ve been with my new job now for about 7 months, and I love it! They don’t pay the best though, and money is constantly tight. Not quite paycheck to paycheck, but I’m not able to save as much as I want to.
Last year in 2021 I was a waiter for a decently upscale restaurant, and I worked there for about 3 and a half or 4 months, doing MAYBE 20 or so hours a week. The managers there were constantly rude and cruel to their employees, which is pretty standard for restaurants, on top of the occasional rude and disrespectful customers who thought they owned you because they’re gullible enough to pay $50 for an overpriced filet and we had an open kitchen. One night I was beyond sick of the abuse, and I had the interview for my current job the night before, where they ended up offering me the job on the spot. So while I was working my last shift at the restaurant, trying to decide if I wanted to put in a 2 weeks notice or not, I decided to just straight up walk out in the middle of the shift even though I had multiple tables.
I didn’t lose any sleep over that fucking job that’s for sure, and I started my new job for an aerospace company the next week. Well this year whenever we received our W2’s for tax season, I noticed on that company’s forum, that they’re claiming I made $13,000 in total tips, even though I was only there for 3 or 4 months working 20 something hours a week. This is causing me to end up owing the irs $2100 in taxes, when in my 25 years I’ve always received money, never had to pay. This is clearly wrong, and since the day I got the W2 I’ve been trying to get it sorted out with them. For about a month and a half I’ve been calling every day and emailing the corporate offices payroll department and I literally cannnot get in contact with anyone that can help me correct it. I have called corporate every single day trying to talk to payroll or anyone that can help me and they give me the runaround saying “oh yeah this person is at their desk right now let me transfer you” and I get a voicemail every time no matter who I get transferred to. I have the phone records to prove it, I’ve been trying for about a month and half. The only thing I know currently is that “corporate is working on it” which I got in email form from corporate after emailing multiple times with my information and issue.
I’m really sorry for the wall of text, I’m just at my wits end. I don’t have the money to pay the irs what I DONT OWE THEM, and I don’t know what to do and taxes are due really soon. If anyone has any advice I’d really appreciate it.
