“We pay you too much”. Says my boss after finding out I got a 2nd job to pay off my student loans.

I work at , doing “entry-level job that required a bachelor's of science” at $20 an hour. This is the only job offer I could find that wasn't in a super expensive state. And I do love my job. It's just hard to live on $20 an hour in a city with high taxes, and with student loans. When my boss found out that I work a second job in the evenings, they said jokingly that I'm “paid too much”. How? If I was paid enough to cover rent, utilities, food, transportation, and student loans, I wouldn't have to get a 2nd job. I don't think most employers realize how much getting a bachelor's degree for a specialized field costs; nor how much the cost of living and being taxed to death is. Sure, 20-30 years ago, $20 an hour was great, but not nowadays if you require a bachelor's degree that costs so much money to get. I saw warehouse jobs requiring little to no experience paying $21 an hour, or more. If you are not offering enough for people to live and pay down their student loans, then don't be surprised if yhey work a 2nd job after they clock out, and eventually leave after they get their 1-3 years of experience for something that pays a lot better. I feel like most employers don't realize how bad the economy really is.
