I live in a small, semi-rural town in Wisconsin where one of the largest employers for high school students is the local walmart.
I started working there last November, and quit about 3 weeks ago. I wanted to post on here right away but I also didn’t want to just sound spiteful so I gave myself some time to cool off.
The first two months were not bad. I had decent hours, worked with people I know from school, and kept my distance from management because honestly I was baked the entire first month (I quit smoking mid-December). I worked on the front end, which is cashiering and such.
In a typical weekend shift (normally 8-5) I would bounce between stocking candy, cashiering, greeting, and sometimes literally just standing at the self checkout and watching people scan their items for several hours with no break. We always had to ask to use the bathroom, even if it wasn’t busy and we hadn’t seen a customer in ages, whenever we needed a manager to override something, they were never around and were always found standing in the back office talking about the employees.
I was getting paid $12 an hour, which isn’t bad but when you consider all of the bullshit i got from customers (ranging from being spit on to people threatening to punch me because I wouldn’t let them blatantly steal because I would lose my job)
