Compared to literally every single one of my friends and family members around my age, I’m doing pretty good for myself. I have a spouse that adds to my income, a (trailer) home, a secure job, parents that help me with student loans still, and I am STILL struggling. I can’t count how many ways I’m privileged, and I’m still ready to jump off a cliff because of the state of living conditions right now.
To put it into perspective, I make more than double the minimum wage. The standard rule in every financial advice column or article I can find, says to pay NO MORE than 30% of your income on housing. If I wasn’t lucky and didn’t have my spouses income (which shouldn’t be a requirement in any scenario), I’d be paying about 60% of my income on my trailer home. Which is the cheapest housing I could find besides sharing an apartment with strangers.
I understand that so many people ignore how bad the living conditions are because it’s overwhelming and they don’t know how to fix it or maybe even convinced by propaganda that this is normal. Even after all that, I still don’t understand why the general population isn’t extremely upset and demanding more from employers, their gov, etc.
What the fuck is going on?
